Overview

This unique course explores the development of twentieth century Nordic Design, from the National Romantic Movement and the distinctive Modernism of the 1920s and 1930s, through the organic forms of the Post-War period, to the emergence of new Scandinavian design in the 1990s. The work of key figures such as Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Oiva Toikka, Gunnel Nyman, Ingeborg Lundin and Kaj Frank, and of companies such as Iittala, Orrefors and Svenskt Tenn, are examined within their social and cultural context. The course also considers the enduring popularity of design in the twentieth century retail sector and on the auction market. Sessions are delivered by Dr Lis Darby, Consultant Lecturer of MA in Fine and Decorative Art and Design, and Lis Bogdan, Course Leader of Decorative Art and Design, Semester Programme, Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
