There are over 1000 public and private art museums in the United States. These non-profit organizations are guided by diverse mission statements and many are rooted in the responsibility of exhibiting and interpreting art for audiences. Art museums finance and fundraising play critical roles in all museum operations and their ability to fulfill their missions. In this quick tutorial we will map the geography of not-for-profit finance and fundraising as it is practiced in US museums, including discussions of earned verses contributed income, the basics of nonprofit accounting, what a healthy budget looks like and where donations come from.
