The valuation of fine art and design for the purposes of damage/loss appraisal reports is a business-critical yet delicate matter composed of numerous voices within tiers of the art trade community. Choosing the right candidate to write a comprehensive valuation report and selecting the appropriate conservator/restorer impacts greatly on the final outcome of valuation and/or re-introduction of a compromised work within the art market.

To address these questions supported by case studies, we will speak with leading specialists in the industry, including: Laura Doyle, vice-president, collections managers for Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, Sylvia Falcón, fine art appraiser in the valuation of damaged works of art and artifacts with a long career in litigation support and experience as a government expert witness and Suzanne Siano, a master conservator of modern and contemporary easel paintings. The discussion will be moderated by Ann-Marie Richard, Director, MA Fine and Decorative Art and Design, Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Laura Doyle, Vice-President, Collections Manager, Chubb

As Collections Manager at Chubb, Laura underwrites large fine art, wine, and jewelry collections, manages strategic relationships with collection services vendors in the United States and Canada, and consults on tangible asset management solutions. She advises private collectors on unique risks including museum loans, private museum programs, art as collateral, transit and storage. Laura has authored articles on fine art risk management, led private art tours for brokers and clients, and taught fine art and collections courses for insurance agents, brokers, and wealth advisors across the country. She has commented on the art market and collections management for Art + Auction, Artnet, Bloomberg, the BBC, The Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, and Town and Country. Laura is actively engaged in a number of arts non-profits, and is a member of ArtTable and the Arts & Records Committee of the Inland Marine Underwriter’s Association. She is USPAP certified by the Appraisers Association of America with training in fine art appraisal. Laura studied Art History and Fine Art Management at the University of Richmond and the University of Bristol in Florence, Italy. She has a certificate in Appraisal Studies of Fine and Decorative Arts from New York University and a Certified Advisor of Personal Insurance designation from the Wharton School of Business.

Sylvia Falcón, Fine Art Specialist, Appraiser

Sylvia Falcón is a specialist in the analysis of damaged works of art and artifacts with regard to valuation, treatment alternatives, and loss assessment, including extensive collaboration with painting, works on paper, photography, and objects conservators.

Sylvia has advised attorneys and government agencies in the litigation of fraud and forgery cases, including cases involving the authenticity of prints by Chagall, Dali, Miró, and Picasso. She has testified as an expert witness in the valuation of art and artifacts in criminal and civil court, and in an administrative hearing before the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Special Research Projects: Provided in-depth market analysis of specific artists, most notably for the estates of Louise Nevelson, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein.

Suzanne Siano, Owner and Chief Conservator, Modern Art Conservation

Suzanne Siano has been practicing art conservation since 1989, beginning as an apprentice in Florence, Italy. After completing a Master’s degree in Art History, Suzanne continued her studies at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, earning a certificate in art conservation. In 1994, Suzanne began working in the paintings conservation department at The Museum of Modern Art. As a contract conservator through 2009, she was involved in all conservation-related aspects of MoMA’s collections care and exhibitions program.

In addition to museum conservation, Suzanne was Associate Conservator in two prominent private New York conservation studios. Suzanne’s area of expertise is modern and contemporary paintings and mixed media artworks. In 2006, she joined the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts as Adjunct Professor, training future conservators the specialized area of modern and contemporary paintings conservation. Suzanne opened her private practice, Modern Art Conservation, in 2007. The studio is located in a Chelsea and includes a team of conservators and support staff.

Ann-Marie Richard, Director, MA Fine and Decorative Art and Design, Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York

Prior to her appointment at the Sotheby's Institute, Ms. Richard was Executive Vice President of Gurr Johns, International, an art advisory firm with globally recognized expertise in valuations and appraisals, among other areas. In this role she served as the senior contemporary art and design specialist, art asset manager and review appraiser. Ms. Richard is a certified member of the Appraisers Association of America as a Modern and Contemporary Art specialist and is USPAP compliant.
